It seems like every magazine & menswear blog touts their lists of style staples on the regular. And, the perennial favorite must have on every list is the navy topcoat. As a result, I picked up Uniqlo’s wool & cashmere blend navy blue Chesterfield topcoat to show that it has more versatility than the coat you only wear to the office.
Here, from a certified coat-a-holic are some tips to rocking your navy topcoat like boss — even if you’re just an intern.

Anchoring Your Suit

[dropcap size=big]F[/dropcap]irst of all, let’s start with rocking the the topcoat with your favorite suit. Be advised, nothing kills a stellar suit faster than pairing it with shabby topcoat.
When you’re suit is the bold star of your outfit, use the navy topcoat to keep it grounded. For example, this particular look has three distinct patterns playing against each other: glen plaid suit, blue and white stripe tie & rugby stripe sock. The topcoat complements the blue knit tie and subdues that strong patterns of the bold suit & socks.
Treat your topcoat like your suit jacket. Therefore, makes sure the fit is on point! It should hug your shoulders and have proper tailoring through the body and arms. Your overall goal is to give your body some shape. Lastly, the sweet spot length is an inch or two above your knee (usually around 35 inches). That way, you’ll avoid Neo in the Matrix duster coat territory.
Sporty Casual w/ a Navy Topcoat Twist

Being able to dress down your topcoat is your weekend style secret weapon (or your every day one). With its tailored details, pair it with favorite joggers pants and sneakers for a smart casual vibe. Since you’re going more relaxed and sporty, add some fun, but, understated lapel pin for a bit of character. Remember, it’s just a coat — so don’t take it too seriously!
Where To Rock This Look
At this point, you’re the most stylishly cozy dude around — so this is the perfect mid day brunch look. Knock back a few mimosas and some prosciutto because you’ve earned it. Most noteworthy is the tailored nature of all these pieces — adding the navy topcoat adds even more polish to the look.

During the late fall and early winter months, a heavyweight peacoat can be overkill. But, using your single breasted topcoat as a layering piece over your favorite denim jacket is a veteran level style swerve. To keep the silhouette of your fit bulk-free, opt for a well tailored trucker jacket.
Two jackets can be better than one, just don’t double pop you collar.
