The Resurgence of The Black Suit

If we’re being honest, the black suit is quite possibly the sexiest suit a man can own, but it doesn’t get the shine it truly deserves. You think funeral, wedding, and job interview—but this noir uniform needs to become a true “essential” in your wardrobe.

Recently, I picked up Suitsupply’s new Perennial Black Suit (plus a few black pieces) and for good reason. The price point for the Perennial Suit Collection is $599, with each suit made of fabric from top mills—E.Thomas, Reda, & VBC—so the quality is clearly there. And, each jacket is half-canvas, providing structure and breathability while maintaining a beautiful drape.

To inspire you to step into your black suit era, I’ve style this one in a sexy, smart-casual way.

To make the black suit a bit more versatile in your wardrobe, opt for a natural shoulder jacket. There will be little to no padding in the shoulders, allowing it to follow your natural slope—very Italian in all the right ways. If you’re shopping by fit at Suitsupply, the Perennial Collection is made in the Havana fit, which is my go-to fit there.

And, don’t be afraid to swap out your white shirt and tie for a henley (seen here). Paired with a henley that has a lower button stance like this one, you’ve officially tapped into the first sexy, smart-casual move.

Accessories will turn this look up a few notches, and to get it right—it’s all about scale. Oversized jewelry and belts will turn this suited look into something that’s more early 2000s, giving off a “night club” vibe. Remember, you’re going for stylish—not gaudy.

What you’ll realize is that a black suit is a blank canvas, so your accessories will stand out. Understanding the need for refinement when picking your pieces is key.

Now, you don’t have to run out and grab a pair of ruched loafers, but they are trending for both men and women. What they add to a black suit look is texture, dimension, and a bit of curiosity. If this style is too much for you—especially if you’re just getting started—opt for a tassel or penny loafer.

And, to address the elephant in the room: yes, going sockless with a suit is perfectly fine. However, it works best when you’ve styled that suit casually. Personally, this is why I always add substantial cuffs to my pants. They add weight to the drape, and when I’m going sockless, the cuff adds a necessary sense of presence.
