The English Wool Herringbone Waist Coat

The fall is about seasonal transition when it comes to menswear. My favorite transitional piece for the fall in the English wool herringbone waist coat by J.Crew. In the effort to add pieces to your wardrobe that are versatile, yet, seasonably appropriate definitely think about adding this waist coat to your closet.

Go Casually:

Mixing denim with a wool herringbone waist coat is a great way to spruce up a casual look in a very “old school” worker kind of way. If you don’t want to go with a collared shirt, add a plain white henley to keep the look relaxed. When going casual, it’s a personal rule of mine to add a “gentlemanly” piece such as a pocket square or loafers to pull out the refined qualities of the waist coat.

Where To Buy:

Pocket Square made by Sabir P. || Rose Gold Skeleton Watch by Alias Kim || Navy Knit Scarf by Gap || Loafers by Johnston & Murphy

Layering:

Silk Knit Polka Dot tie by The Knottery || Wool Navy Blazer by Onassis Clothing || Shadow Plaid Cotton Pants by Banana Republic || Pocket Square by Armstrong & Wilson || Shades by AJ Morgan

One of the benefits a wool herringbone waist coat to your wardrobe is that it is perfecting for layering this fall.  Since this waist coat has such detail in the fabric, pairing it with a navy blazer makes the waist coat stand out without being too “busy”. A silk pocket square give you a bit of flair without taking away for the overall look.

Prep It Up

Substation Bag by J.Fold || Rose Color Pants by Lands End Heritage Collection (Self Tapered) || English Herringbone Waist Coat by J.Crew || Knit Fair Isle Tie by Brooklyn Industries || Cobalt Blue Socks by Lands End || Chocolate Suede Loafers by Mercanti Fiorentini

Take a risk, add a serious infusion of color with not so traditional trouser. The great thing about a brown herringbone waist coat is that the color complements most combination, as well as, neutralizes otherwise louder parts of your ensemble. When you plan to go ahead and take that color risk, be sure to pair the look with a subtle shoe. Herringbone blazer and waist coat are quintessential staples of the “prep” wardrobe and it is always great to mix with more modern prep pieces like the rose color trousers, fair isle knit tie, and Oxford shirts.
