Once considered a fashion faux pas, pairing blue & black in your looks has really taken off over the last few years. A color combination that’s been a favorite of high fashion brands for several seasons has found itself into everyday street style. You may have seen black & blue combos in traditional menswear looks and they come off extremely polished, however; the best iteration might be streetwear.

This post features a look with pieces from streetwear brand Grungy Gentleman & heritage outdoor brand Timberland.

Pulling off pairing blue & black clothing is actually fairly easy. If you’re a novice to this not-so-technicolor styling you should start with streetwear inspired pieces. Often offering more texture and variation in details, streetwear piece like denim shirts, suede boots and joggers  lend themselves to color, texture & pattern play.

How To Pull Off The Black & Blue Look (Streetwear Inspired)

  • Start with a black base. Black jeans or jogger (sweatpant or twill). This will make putting your look together quite simple
  • Think about texture. For example, the boots and jacket in this look are both suede. Pairing multiple textures like suede with denim will add depth to your look and break up the flat noir monotony
  • A washed denim shirt pairs best, however; a buttoned-down Oxford shirt will work fine. The rich blue hue will pop against the black jacket & joggers
  • Don’t pair indigo with this look. The reason being is that it will appear as though you’re trying to match the black & indigo colors (because of how close they are). It doesn’t work.
  • Small touches of white will cut the severity of this look (see hat, shirt buttons and jogger cuffs)
  • Use your accessories to complement your look. Oranges, greys & blues will be the ideal color choices when selecting you accessories
